Re: Cycling two abreast

...might even be regarded as best practice. Where I have a preference, I'd probably prefer they were two abreast and the group was shorter in length. I'd guess the cause of animosity for many drivers is that side by side means they have to overtake rather than barging past those in single file. In ...

I'm with you on this, and that aiming for calmness while surrounded by chaos seems the best way. Attempting to overcome that with aggression seems counter productive.

Besides, it isn't Naples ;)

Re: The state of roads.

Didn't the Spanish government spend a huge amount on road and other civil engineering projects a few years ago? That would have given them great road quality to start with. Non scientific observation (a holiday a couple of years ago) would suggest that their major routes have significantly lower tra...

Re: How does advanced driving deal with a modern manual gearbox

We also agree that the gear-change indicators are set to maximize economy. My 3 cylinder petrol engine doesn't just indicate up or down, but specifies which gear it would like you to select. Moderate acceleration will ask for one or even two gears lower so while there is a bias towards economy it i...

Re: RoSPA launches website to keep older drivers safe on the roads

I have been looking for some device that would monitor speed against limit to give a back up warning. The "old" TomTom UK app on iPhone had audible alerts for camera locations and for straying over the limit. I say "old" because it has just been replaced with TomTom Go which, as...

Re: Removal of white lines

I can sort of understand it in well-lit urban areas with no requirement for directing the traffic into lanes for different routes, but on a dark, wet rural road surrounded by nasties such as trees and ditches, I find the benefit hard to discern. Seems many of the trials have been villages rather th...

Re: Learners - motorways, night, bad weather

The worst being lorry drivers who seem to think that they can stop 44 tonnes in less than a few car lengths. I'm not convinced this trait is exclusive to lorry drivers - stopping distances seem to be very low on the list of priorities for most motorway drivers. Joining from a slip road, lane use, i...
