Re: ROSPA - "you need a police background to get gold"

Jason is a bit of a queer mixture - drives a completely bonkers chav-mobile (when it's not broken) but has a RoSPA Gold to go with it ;) Many years ago I had, among other things, a Simca 1100 that found new ways of letting me down every week, and a very aged yellow Saab 96 with a two-stroke engine ...

Re: ROSPA - "you need a place background to get gold"

One of the criteria for a Gold award that was often quoted by our local RoSPA examiners about 15 years ago was that they were... "looking for someone whose driving, in their opinion, indicated that they had the potential to do well on a police advanced course" We should be cautious when e...

Re: ROSPA - "you need a place background to get gold"

The examiner was unequivocally wrong about the need for a police background to get gold, and it's also quite unsupportable for another examiner to say, 'I don't hand out golds on the first test'. If the drive is gold standard then gold it must be - and I got gold on my first drive without a police b...

Re: Motorway Hard Shoulders

Agreed about the A14 and A1 - and there are countless other examples. The difference is that on those roads there is no existing hard shoulder so we don't join them expecting one - whereas on the motorway we're accustomed to having one and may not know it's not there until we're committed. Where the...

Motorway Hard Shoulders

Not sure whether this is the right place to put this - I've chosen 'cars' because that's what I drive and it's probably more critical for cars than bikes because of the width which leaves us with fewer options. So here's the issue: do others agree with me that to allow use that leaves a motorway wit...

Re: Grip qualities of road surfaces

Stability control tech can cause strange feelings/sensations when it kicks in. IN my particular case I was nowhere near triggering the ESP, and the car was quite stable and well-balanced. I re-drove the bend in both directions several times with no problems except that it just didn't feel as positi...

Re: Grip qualities of road surfaces

It's obviously a very complex subject and not one that can be analysed on the move - so what it amounts to really is that any change of road surface is to be noted and taken account of, recognising that it can potentially affect the handling more than might be predicted. Add to that that, in the eve...

Re: Grip qualities of road surfaces

Thanks, folks - as always it's a more complex subject than I'd given it credit for! That should keep me in bedtime reading for a while!
