Re: IAM RoADAR is a punishment

I does seem strange that so many people complain of not enjoying driving and yet advanced driving is not perceived as a way of addressing that. If I have to do something every day and I find it stressful, then surely finding a way of making it at least tolerable if not enjoyable is worth trying? Ano...

Re: What was your first car?

My very first car, in 1962, was a 1936 Morris 8. No boot, spare wheel stowed above the rear bumper, taxi-like rear leg-room (with leather upholstery) and the 1936 version of a dipping mirror - a blind in the rear window pulled up by a cord on the driver's side of the windscreen. Cost? £3 from a frie...

Re: Is AD 'better driving'?

It often helps to turn a question around and apply the same principle. So instead of asking whether we would refrain from a legitimate overtake to avoid giving the wrong impression, maybe we should ask whether we would do an ill-advised overtake just to avoid being thought over-cautious by the drive...

Re: Is AD 'better driving'?

It's worth remembering why 'advanced driving' was thought of. As I understand it, in the relatively early days of car transport police drivers' accident rate was astronomical and so the decision came about to train them specially for the demands of the task, and that meant developing a skill set tha...

Re: Blue lights overkill

My apologies - I meant this to be on the 'cars' page as I'm not a biker, but it's early in the morning and I'm clearly still asleep! But then, Ii guess it's a similar issue for all of us. I'm quite happy to transfer it to the cars page if that would be preferred. :D

Blue lights overkill

At a country crossroads, after dark, I came upon the scene of an incident - highly visible because three emergency vehicles were present, each with blue and red lights flashing, a police car front and rear and an ambulance in the middle. I approached from a minor road to turn right a few yards away ...

Re: Of historical interest?

Do you know that the new AA Advanced Driving Diploma is currently being relaunched ? Interesting - I wonder at what level they're pitching it? They already have a course that they say is designed to get people to RoSPA gold. How will their diploma differ from current IAM and RoSPA offerings? The on...

Re: Looking after cyclists

There are some roads near me - some of my regular rat-runs - where a combination of bends and undulations means that one can be stuck behind a cyclist for quite some time before coming to a place where it is safe to overtake with a good margin. I do believe it's important to allow adequate space - i...

https://webstroke.co.uk/law/cases/johnson-v-phillips-1975 The first function of a constable has for centuries been the preservation of the peace. Re: Blues and Twos and Traffic Lights

If that's not enough, then the 'Blue Light Aware' website will also help explain that it is indeed an offence to pass through a red light in the circumstances described. Thanks for the reference, Rolyan - I hadn't been aware of this website but it's good to know about it. For anyone else who's inte...
