I don't feel to have much of a problem with LH bends: there I'll stay out wide (oncoming traffic permitting, of course) and move to a more NS position after the bend. not all that early - I started on Alpha mainframes, and a 1/2byte memory, card-reader HP computer (first computer in any school apparently!)
I am sure though that we will have someone on here who knew Babbage!
