That's AVs running on software written by humans :)

Re: Safety systems are there to be gamed...

It shouldn't be too difficult to think up a scenario for an impending collision where the autonomous car you are travelling in will sacrifice your life (or at least seriously injure you) rather than taking evasive action that would/could maim or kill others. Can you come up with one? OK, that's sli...

Re: Safety systems are there to be gamed...

OK, see what you mean - but it's worth noting that those [prototype] vehicles are operating in the vicinity of pedestrians, that's the Milton Keynes trials. In similar circumstances wouldn't a competent driver do the same? [The video clips I saw were of an AV running on the Greenwich peninsula, in a...

Re: Safety systems are there to be gamed...

As I've posted before: I've seen videos of pedestrians deliberately and knowingly walk in front of an autonomous vehicle . . . at 5mph. Would almost be quicker just to walk. So let's be clear; you would commit to a situation where pedestrians could walk into the road, driving at a speed at wh...

Re: Safety systems are there to be gamed...

We know how fast pedestrians can move sideways (it's not an infinite speed) and have automatic cars moderate their speed when passing humans at that distance, such that any impact will not do significant harm (another calculable limit that we can stay well below). This is likely to mean that vehicl...

Ah, that will be the 'glass half leakey' view of engineering?

Perhaps you should be more concerned about AVs being built down to a price point, with compromise as a result.

Re: Safety systems are there to be gamed...

but realism says that nothing is perfect, so it would be a bit remiss to not consider it. If you start considering it, you then start making excuses about shoddy software being acceptable because the car can make ethical decisions.... and what's to say you won't have bugs in the ethics code too? Su...

Re: Safety systems are there to be gamed...

Surely it's being honest and accepting that, sooner or later, this situation will occur? Your expectation might vary - but realism says that nothing is perfect, so it would be a bit remiss to not consider it.

By using algorithms to make decisions in situations where harming humans is possible, probable, or even unavoidable, a self-driving car's ethical behavior comes pre-defined....
