Re: Is AD 'better driving'?

You'd think that, and (particularly given my location) I've spent a lot of time explaining to clients that even in broad daylight it actually does make a difference - if a marginal one - at reducing all kinds of collisions (outside of rear-end collisions) in all forms of transportation. Actually, Is...

Re: Is AD 'better driving'?

Dipped beams are only a substitute in vehicles that are not equipped with dedicated DRLs. They can improve conspicuousness from straight ahead, albeit are relatively low levels of ambient light (at least, low by my book). However, much of the effect of DRLs is at junctions where dipped beams can be ...

Re: Is AD 'better driving'?

Sadly, it's not that simple. Yea, it isn't. There are a host of issues including the novelty effect, cameoflauging of brake lights, angle of dipped beam and so forth. Nevertheless, most researches (including the one you quoted) do conclude that Daytime Running Lights (or dipped beam) are effective....

Re: Is AD 'better driving'?

I think this sort of people exist everywhere, and it's all too easy to mistake them for the majority of drivers. Anyhow, we can do something to make them the least upset.

Re: Is AD 'better driving'?

And I thought I was Mr Conservative when it came to overtaking. Oh, I think the overtakes are alright, but the subject of the thread relates to how Advanced Drivers are perceived on the road, namely via "unsociable" overtakes. The only way to ensure an overtake not being perceived as inco...

Re: Is AD 'better driving'?

All the overtakes in the video are legitimate, but I can see how others might deem overtake number 1 and number 4 "unsociable" in that there is oncoming traffic in sight, although at a more than adequate distance for safety.

Re: Is AD 'better driving'?

I think Advanced Driving should in times be made to appear sociable. For instance, AD logic would dictate that a signal is not needed when another driver isn't in a position to benefit from it. However, since drivers are taught to signal out of habit, they might view this as bad driving, which is wh...

Re: IAM RoADAR is a punishment

Agreed. The reality is that few people think they are bad drivers. The tendency is to assume that someone else is always the problem.[...]There has to either be a stick or carrot[...] Where is the carrot?[...]If you talk about people being better drivers they assume you mean handling skills / track...

Re: Two Chevron rule6

A 2 second gap is a great and easy to judge way of keeping a reasonable gap...it's less than the highway code stopping distance - @ 70mph 2 seconds is 62m but it's considerably more than many drivers leave. It's a good guide and bearing in mind there are very few situations where the hazard ahead w...

Re: Just curious

The irony is that 'proper' coaching doesn't involve telling, but involves the subject (for want of another term not ending in -ee ;) ) doing the work to find solutions by responding to careful questioning (which needn't require expert subject knowledge on the part of the coach). Yes, but coaching f...
