Re: ROSPA - "you need a police background to get gold"

I think ratty probably meant RoSPA Head Office. Talking to your local tutors (your terminology is a bit confused so hard to work out who's who - for instance tutors don't conduct tests) is very unlikely to have any effect* * Neither is talking to Head Office, to be frank, especially with the curren...

Re: What would an "advanced driver" autonomous car do...?

How many professional drivers do you think there will be in 50 years? How many private cars, when you can call up an autonomous taxi in a similar way to calling an Uber now? And long before then, most vehicles on major roads will be operated autonomously while their occupants relax. The autonomous v...

Re: How many advanced drivers are there?

I am sure it is published, and someone will be along with more specific figures. However, in very approximate terms, 400k people have taken the IAMRoadsmart advanced driving test since it was introduced in the 50's, there are currently slightly fewer than 100k paid up members, and IIRC (but I am not...

Re: Any ROSPA test tips

When you get into a different car from the one you drove last, it can be useful to accustom yourself to the feel of the brakes. I think more in terms of trying out the feel of the brakes than of testing them, and I do it in an unfamiliar car - perhaps multiple times. It may take the form of just bei...

Re: Paying above list price for a car.

I am a bit surprised by your 80 mph on icy roads. On icy roads a 4wd car will take just as far to stop as a 2wd car. I would find that the limiting factor for speed. The greatest difference will be due to the type of tyres, with winter tyres making more difference than 4wd. As to pulling out of junc...

Re: Front vs Rear tyre wear

During Volvo winter driving courses on ice, they let us play with winter tyres on the front and summer tyres on the back of front wheel drive cars. The cars were hilarious - extraordinary levels of oversteer at really slow speeds. We are talking full opposite lock at 5 mph. They called them the 'wib...

Re: Paying above list price for a car.

What benefits of 4wd do you enjoy? Personally, I have never felt the need, except in severe winter conditions. By your reference to 'not full time' are you implying that the Focus does not use full time 4wd? I understood that its innovative system from GKN is full time. It also includes active torqu...

Re: Paying above list price for a car.

Thanks for the range of views. Although an oldun, I like a bit of raw. It's to replace an Impreza Turbowagon, a Classic 1999, bought new at list but chance had led me to a then recently appointed dealer who was given extra allocation so I got it in two months rather than the then nine or more. I am...

Re: First Time Automatic Owner

Technical expert? In marketing, perhaps. Your dealer's service manager might know the answers. Have you tried? :lol. I'd expect about the same level of "expertise". Main dealers these days are pretty much limited to plugging in a laptop and changing whichever box it tells them is broken :...
