The other thing that irritates is the increase in the range of tools needed to do anything to a modern car. Time was a small socket set, a few screwdrivers and big hammer sufficed (plus a torque wrench if you were posh), but now all sorts of weird things are needed. Plus a PhD in electronic engineer...

I believe that many of the 50's are the result of local lobbying. It's an easy process and no thought or rational decisions needed.

Here in Oxfordshire it is commnon practice for all A-roads to be a 50, with minor roads, particularly those with grass growing down the middle to be at full NSL. Sigh.

I suspect it's one of those legacy regulations that date back to when most cars had easily replaceable bulbs. It's been overtaken by events rather. I go to France quite regularly and carry one of those little spare bulb kits (not sure whether any of them actually fit the Saab Aero ... )

I stopped wearing reactive lenses for the reason you mention and also because even when clear they are not as clear as non reactive lenses. Most noticable when night driving. For period I used to keep clear lensed glasses in the car for driving and reactive lenses for other times. The best solution...

We are having a lot of sunshine at the moment. It is really rather pleasant to bimble about in the sunshine, but going into the shadows of a belt of trees can be quite disconcerting, particularly if one has Reactolite glasses which don't immediately respond. I have also felt the need to drive around...

Good idea, Johyn. I fear I am being rather constructive about route to and from shops. On Friday it was round the corner to the farm shop and back via the Berkshire Downs.
