Re: Mobile phones

None of the studies people have posted on this thread seem to have much relevance to [me]. Even the brainscan one? How is your brain activity different? Different from what? At what point do these mind altering waves take effect? Is it when I cancel a call or dial back from a layby? Maybe it is dur...

Re: Mobile phones

Isn't it the case that increasingly the research is showing all mobile phone use has a detrimental effect - hence the law should catch up. I quite agree enforcing the ban on hands-free use would be very difficult but it still might be worth doing as it sends the message (and I don't mean 'text'!): ...

Re: Mobile phones

it is possible to recognise and minimise the hazards involved and thus maintain safety. . However, see the link I posted last night referring to brain activity and field of view. I would suggest that most drivers who choose to make cals don't actually know the effects it as on them, so an 'accurate...

Re: Mobile phones

The more I think about it, the less acceptable it seems (see above). As I see it the problem in this case with using any sort of risk assessment methodology (like the two studies mentioned, and in your link) is that you start with the assumption that one single factor (mobile phone operation) defin...

Re: Mobile phones

Yes - I said 'acceptable' not 'good'. I couldn't think of a way of making it into a 'double blind' study. Potentially the biggest source of error would be the participants knowing which group they were in and adjusting their driving accordingly.

Re: Mobile phones

Aaaarggghhh.....As a simple biologist I am quite used to having statisticians run rings around me, but even I can see that the studies quoted by Horse are a bit dubious! In the first one we don't know what proportion of drivers actually possessed mobile phones (this was pre 2006 remember). Imagine t...

Re: Mobile phones

Maybe those who have so much faith in the 'studies' might try to explain why the accident rate hasn't soared since the widespread adoption of mobile phones? Even hand held use (which is obviously common, foolish and, rightly, illegal), doesn't seem to be all that dangerous in purely statistical term...

Re: Mobile phones

Personally I came to the conclusion many years ago (before the law) that . . . The next stage was to repeat the drive, also listen through headphones to a recorded sequence of random letters being read out. Then, as well as reacting to the on-screen tasks, react by saying 'yes' every time the audio...

Re: Mobile phones

Personally I came to the conclusion many years ago (before the law) that . . . What convinced me was helping a mate who, at the time, was doing a psychology PhD. He was investigating possibilities for assessing the effect of brain injury on perception and driving ability. He needed a number of 'neu...
