Re: Parliament Briefing Papers
No, it ties back to what a jury will believe a competent and careful driver may legitimately do, i.e. it is cultural. Hence in England a jury is quite capable of believing (and a judge is capable of directing) that a competent and careful driver can accidentally drive into a person who has been in p...

Re: Why Self-Driving Cars Must Be Programmed to Kill
And now all google cars will have learned that big vehicles use their size to bully their way through (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-35692845) Google said it had now refined its self-driving algorithm. "From now on, our cars will more deeply understand that buses (and other large vehicle...

Re: Fuel Additives - When is it too much?
Edit: they may add additives at the station, I have my doubts, but additives shouldn't change your fuel economy. Those of us old enough, may remember "Formula Shell" (late 80s) - it did improve my economy by about 10%. Unfortuneately, it also buggered small Vauxhall (amongst others) engin...

Re: What Happened?
A dedicated Road Traffic Investigation branch might just (if it were properly funded) mean that knowledgeable investigators were assigned and remitted to take RTIs seriously, instead of treating them as a 'bit or paperwork': http://www.telegraph.co.uk/men/recreational-cycling/why-do-drivers-get-away...

Re: RoSPA launches website to keep older drivers safe on the roads
It's a way that people by and large, naturally segment themselves. It's a growing segment of the population, some will be looking for advice tat they believe is relevant specifically because of their age. Some of the advice and information is relevant to other groups (mobility issues for example) an...

Re: Old ADUK...oh dear
Since we are a culture which respects Science and wish to base policy on Science rather than on some wooly 'beliefs', should we not be taking the scientific evidence into account? Really? What evidence brings you to that conclusion? ;) There are areas (drugs policy for starters) where knee jerk rea...

Re: Avoiding BGOL around town
WRT the OP, I have a similar 'issue' driving country lanes: On the straights, the Skoda Superb (1.6 diesel) estate is happy at NSL in 4th or 5th (depending on slope), but the bends often don't reveal the required gear until late (due to muckle great cliffs disguising whether it's up or down after th...

Interesting thread drift! There seems to be an assumption that older posters have not been exposed to LGBT issues or verbal bullying; which is interesting: Did this all start (as some people -not here- assume paedophilia did  ) in the last thirty years? Or perhaps older folk have indeed met th...

Re: Automation deskilling pilots
This question has already been thoroughly researched. Just read "the glass cage - where automation is taking us" by Nicholas Carr. Yes, it's already happening and, unfortunately, the pace at which automation in car is deskilling drivers is actually accelerating. But I will stop here. I ha...

Re: How does advanced driving deal with a modern manual gearbox
As a counterpoint: Perhaps, to develop real skill, we should all still be mixing the air and fuel mixture manually with separate levers? After all, the control of the carburetors with a single pedal was a simplification which resulted in loss of skills.
