Re: Glimmer of hope?

....and a Happy Easter to one and all. Er, am I allowed to mention 'Easter'? Best wishes all, Dave. Of course :) Happy Easter! Alasdair Actually, my question was prompted by seeing a newspaper headline claiming that the word 'Easter' was being omitted from Easter Egg packaging, in order to avoid up...

Re: RoSPA launches website to keep older drivers safe on the roads

It seems to have been missed, so I'll ask again... ... when approaching a bend, I occasionally leave things like gear changing a bit late and then I brake firmly ... If I read the above correctly: on the approach to a bend, you leave your gear change late and THEN you brake firmly. What's wrong wit...

Re-read the recent posts, he clarifies this. I don't think most people on here are used to receiving this level of self-reflecton and honest reporting. I have read the recent posts. A few times. He gives the impression that "emergency stops" are not uncommon. As to "how" he brak...

Re: RoSPA launches website to keep older drivers safe on the roads

But if you drove a smaller car with stiffer suspension you would feel as if you were travelling faster, especially if the car were closer to the ground. Similarly, if you drove a larger more comfortable car you would feel as if you were travelling slower than the car you're used to, just as when yo...

Re: Leaving your car in gear when parked

AIUI, a drum has a larger contact area, and therefor more friction is produced which should result in more power. But this results in more heat being produced, which has an adverse effect on braking, therefor, drums are less efficient except as hand brakes. Nigel. Ah, so I see... I wonder if someon...

Re: RoSPA launches website to keep older drivers safe on the roads

although for a deaf person the speedometer and rev counter are a must. Obviously, individuals are different, and while I shall agree with the necessity of a rev counter if you're obsessed with rev-matching, they're not really a 'must'... Speedometers, again, aren't a must either. If I'm in the appr...

Re: Leaving your car in gear when parked

No, just drums in this case. Bloody good drums they were too. Not unusual to lock the rear wheels with them. Crappy old tyres, of course :( Interesting fact that for a given size drum brakes are actually more powerful than discs, especially with leading shoes. However discs have better modulation, ...

Re: RoSPA launches website to keep older drivers safe on the roads

I rarely look at the speedometer on my Fiesta but use road and engine noise to determine speed. This becomes necessary when you can't see the speedometer from the passenger seat whilst teaching a learner. They soon get the message when I lean over to look. You can develope this ability when you use ...
