Re: Dissertation survey

Well, legitimising passing either side would free things up, but if folk are so inattentive they can't even be bothered to move left when there's a lane free, I'd much rather have them off the roads altogether. I believe there's a thing called a "bus" or "train" if you don't wan...

Re: Dissertation survey

There would of course be the increased congestion caused by loss of a running lane, but other traffic management aspects such as variable speed limit gantries would probably remain, so a ‘reverted’ SM may still flow better than before it became smart. Agressively ticketing MLMs would make a signifi...

Re: An interesting, if unsettling, development.

These days I use a phone and Google for directions. Mine’s able to connect to the car audio via bluetooth so spoken directions are loud and clear. The actual phone however is tucked away out of sight, such as in a side pocket of my jacket. Being invisible the temptation to look at it is removed and...

Re: An interesting, if unsettling, development.

I thought anything stuck to the windscreen within the sweep of the wiper blades was a MOT fail. I find that hard to believe. In the days of tax disks they would sometimes have been attached within the sweep of the wiper blades. What are the specific rules about sizes and locations of screen damage ...

Are there no functions which you can only operate via the touch screen?

Re: Hyundai keeping buttons

I have a seven year old Hyundai Tucson - it has been trouble free and I like it a lot. Since we are on an AD forum I will mention that one of the main reasons I chose it over all the other mid-market SUV's is that the top spec version was available with a manual gearbox. That would not apply to any ...

Re: Dissertation survey

I recently enjoyed the great experience of a shift in a roads policing car. I saw 130 mph on the M25 and was most impressed at how smoothly we moved to the hard shoulder when traffic slowed and were able to continue at 50 to 60 mph. We might have been able to continue had there been no hard shoulder...

Re: Dissertation survey

I once experienced a vehicle fire on a Swiss motorway. We stopped on the hard shoulder in view of a camera. A police car arrived with fire extinguishers inside one minute. If you could get an emergency vehicle to anyone stopped on an otherwise running lane in that sort of time frame smart motorways ...

Re: Dissertation survey

This appeared in my mailbox today... Major system failure leaves smart motorways across England without safety features for two hours Strange for this to appear now. It happened on Feb 22nd - thankfully with no crashes reported as a result. I was listening to the radio on the day, when it was repor...

Re: Dissertation survey

on a dual carriageway, most drivers expect to see turnings / junctions / roundabouts / laybys / camera vans on the verge / utilities etc. on a motorway, most drivers expect to see nothing else - they feel that they are in their own private lane and nothing will get in the way - therefore, they swit...
