Young drivers

I taught my daughter to drive from age 17 , augmented by some professional lessons , and she turned out well , now 31 with a good driving record and very competent to sit beside . My son , now aged 9 , has become very interested in cars and driving , focussed as many youngsters are on motorsport and...

I presume the examiner didn’t ask him to perform an emergency stop after that happening .

Re: 2017 Changes

The other kind of motorist I've seen on sliproads are the ones who join it at the top, very sedately speed up, with no regard to the traffic on the carriageway, and then suddenly panic when they realise they're 'running out of road' as it were, and they're alongside a lorry, with another one very c...

Re: Near miss

I too had a near thing a week ago , rather than type it all out again , below is a copy/paste of what I posted on one of my car club forums last Monday . I came close to being rear ended yesterday ; It would have been just typical as I had just bought a little Polo as a run-around since my two Mercs...

Re: Graduated licensing again

With my birthday being in January, practically all of my formal lessons were taken after dark , with my parents giving me extra practice in between and during daylight at weekends. As soon as I had my licence , I was off and out on the roads day and night . I especially liked night driving as roads ...

Re: Graduated licensing again

Hmmm , they want to ban new drivers from motorways, just after announcing that learners are to be permitted on them ? Ban on night driving - I appreciate that many new driver RTCs happen at night - but isn’t this because that is the only time many can get on the road ? IMHO there should be an elemen...

Re: Driving instructors and learners - do they drive like each other?

I can turn my ABS off by going into Race mode. That turns everything off and I'd never use it on the road. Sport mode detunes ESC sensitivity while using more revs by holding each gear longer (it also alters the timing/fuel a little). You can hold the sport mode button in to then flip through some ...

Re: Have diesel cars got a future?

It also depends on your intended use : long/short journeys , high/low annual miles , towing ?

Different cars are suited to different tasks .

Re: Uh-Oh . . . Trouble in the stable :)

If you mean changing into neutral while still moving (albeit slowly) - I thought that was a bad practice on autos as it can cause damage? I guess it's the same as towing an auto which is explicitly warned against in the manufacturers manuals I've seen. Certainly not with Mercedes-Benz : you can tow...

Re: Uh-Oh . . . Trouble in the stable :)

Oh , at this time of year , when icy surfaces can be a problem , worth mentioning that it can be beneficial in an automatic to slip into neutral when coming up to a junction : you then don’t have the back wheels pushing the car on while the fronts are trying to stop it with limited grip - makes a hu...
