Re: What would an "advanced driver" autonomous car do...?

Aircraft have been fitted with ABS for far longer than cars. I can't think of any pilot who would attempt not to use this if needs be. All these devices are there, to be used, as and when they have to be. What does need to be done is to educate people to their use. It's said that it takes about 50 ...

Re: So how do you cope with these crossings?

Surely motorists should be prepared to share the road with those legally entitled to use it? /dons flame suit. Maybe it's time we removed that entitlement. We seem happy enough to remove entitlements from the majority of motorists due to the antics of a small minority. The UK population is growing ...

Re: So how do you cope with these crossings?

implemented ludicrous cycle schemes to use them before signing off? At the same time though - does a facility existing abrogate responsibility from a cyclist deciding that it's safe to use? It might be their right, but to exert that right in the face of ever falling driving standards, and where it'...

Re: So how do you cope with these crossings?

In the same way that I think people in favour of "surface dressing" as a suitable alternative to resurfacing should be shot blasted by lorries driving along surface dressed roads at NSL speeds, maybe we should start requiring those implemented ludicrous cycle schemes to use them before sig...

Re: What would an "advanced driver" autonomous car do...?

This is why cars now have emergency brake assist (so if you hit them suddenly, then lift off because the ABS has activated my understanding is this keeps the brakes applied even if you let go of the pedal - I'm not sure at what point the brakes then release? Maybe when you stop, or kick the throttl...

Re: What would an "advanced driver" autonomous car do...?

Blimey! I had a post deleted by the moderator of one safety-related site after having the temerity suggest letting go of the wheel in a situation where the airbag is about to go off [to avoid the 'arms crossed over the airbag' issue] Although that had been suggested by a World expert on airbags, it...

Re: What would an "advanced driver" autonomous car do...?

I was lent a DVD about driving skills*, IIRC it included a demo of threshold braking instead of allowing the ABS to operate. If that was the case, fine for an expert driver who is prepared to brake and on a known good surface . . . IIRC Stressed Dave can demonstrate the difference in stopping dista...

Re: What would an "advanced driver" autonomous car do...?

I believe it is good to try these devices out but always when alone in the car. My experience is that very few people are aware of how to use them, that includes ABS brakes. Any of the ADIs here able to tell how DVSA have altered their test criteria to suit ABS? As Astraist posted recently (and, AF...

IIRC meeting & lunch venues with sufficient capacity were more of a restriction than appropriate routes ;)

Will BMW start fitting their autonomous cars with indicators?
