Re: Mobile phones
...Firstly, I can't remember what the studies were or where they were published... Links to 2 such studies are in posts earlier in this thread... Personally I came to the conclusion many years ago (before the law) that: a) hands-free use was significantly distracting me and b) nothing in a call was...

Re: Mobile phones
Excellent post Horse.
Sussex Uni has done some work in this field comparing hand-held with hands-free and found perhaps surprising similarities in the degradation of driver performance.

Re: Mobile phones
IIAC the use of a citizens band radio to converse with a fellow radio user is not illegal, but it still involves the same processes as using a mobile phone. Nigel. Yes the mobile phone law is badly worded but I guess CB and VHF use isn't seen as a large scale problem - so it's not worth pursuing. N...

Re: Mobile phones
One of the problems with mobile phone use is it's usually a distraction for much longer than things like changing a CD or lighting a fag. Also the unique interaction with a distant person has been shown to be much more of a problem than more routine tasks (which isn't really surprising). Sussex Uni ...

Re: Mobile phones
Yes and the penalty is due to increase again next year to 6 points and £200 fine. That RTC was horrendous but I hate the way the good ol' Daily Mail used it to focus on foreign lorry drivers and had a front page spread with only them pictured using their phones. Any excuse to reinforce stereotypes a...

Re: perfectly legal, but still felt guilty.
Yes I know what you mean. I do something similarly 'naughty' at a roundabout near me...I approach in lane 2 (arrowed as right turn only) overtaking lots of queued traffic but go straight on (second exit) as I know their are 2 lanes on the exit as well. I'm fully prepared to abort and go all the way ...

Re: Black Boxes
Yes and at least one black box company aimed at younger drivers, give bonus points for motorway driving and negative points for rural B roads...independently of how they are driven. their excuse is: motorways are safer per mile so they want to encourage their use. I can't believe this is sensible us...

Re: Black Boxes
I think even manual car's ECU knows which gear is selected and is probably accessible from the OBD port.
Some boxes reward rather then penalise - 'Insure the Box' for instance.

Re: IAM RoADAR is a punishment
I've come across many people who have no idea what advanced driving is - they say things like: "yeah I did an advanced driving course a while back" and when questioned mention things like: Pass Plus, Speed Awareness, Skid Pan sessions etc. ROADAR and IAM only touch a tiny proportion...

Re: Black Boxes
They all have their own 'proprietary' algorithms but usually measure: g-force, speed, speed related to speed limit, time of day, type of road being used. I've not heard of any measuring gear selection or cornering line (other than simple g-force). Some cynics say they have little affect other than e...
