Re: Mobile phones

How should I evaluate your personal experience when mine is different? I find the suggestion that it is difficult to maintain a steady speed or a considered position in lane when carrying on a chatty phone conversation extraordinary. How do you think the police avoid crashing when talking to their ...

Re: Mobile phones

I don't think we are a millions miles apart. I do agree some mobile phone activities are less dangerous than others...to the extreme of hardly any detrimental effect at all (very short calls, calls when stationary, calls then on an empty motorway). However I think 99% of use is detrimental. Your exa...

Re: Mobile phones

OK...For the past twenty years or so I have reasonably regularly driven 400+ mile journeys (up to Aberdeen, down to Orleans etc.) as part of my job visiting field trials amongst other things. I did these journeys (and all the other travelling I had to do) initially without a phone of any sort, then...

Re: Mobile phones

Isn't it the case that increasingly the research is showing all mobile phone use has a detrimental effect - hence the law should catch up. I quite agree enforcing the ban on hands-free use would be very difficult but it still might be worth doing as it sends the message (and I don't mean 'text'!): d...

Re: Mobile phones

...e.g. yesterday having not had a call while driving for many months, I was phoned, I was approaching a lorry and two cars with an opportunity to overtake them as we came out of a sequence of bends onto a long straight, thinking of this conversation I backed off focused on the road, answered the c...

Re: Mobile phones

The more I think about it, the less acceptable it seems (see above). As I see it the problem in this case with using any sort of risk assessment methodology (like the two studies mentioned, and in your link) is that you start with the assumption that one single factor (mobile phone operation) defin...

Re: Mobile phones

Maybe those who have so much faith in the 'studies' might try to explain why the accident rate hasn't soared since the widespread adoption of mobile phones? Even hand held use (which is obviously common, foolish and, rightly, illegal), doesn't seem to be all that dangerous in purely statistical ter...

Re: Road Safety Week tips from IAM Roadsmart

Don't like the emphasis on speed. How about any/all of these: ⋅ Brush-up your driving skills and learn modern driving techniques ⋅ Don't rely on what you learnt when you were 17/18 - update your skills ⋅ Think you're a good driver? Most people do but there is so much mo...

Advanced Submariner?

Blimey - pretty extensive flooding down here in Bristol today...the rural roads are pretty bad in places and some of the urban ones as well. Apart from being very dark, foggy on the hills and quite chilly, it's lovely driving conditions.
