Re: Dissertation survey
I once experienced a vehicle fire on a Swiss motorway. We stopped on the hard shoulder in view of a camera. A police car arrived with fire extinguishers inside one minute. If you could get an emergency vehicle to anyone stopped on an otherwise running lane in that sort of time frame smart motorways ...

Re: Dissertation survey
This appeared in my mailbox today... Major system failure leaves smart motorways across England without safety features for two hours Strange for this to appear now. It happened on Feb 22nd - thankfully with no crashes reported as a result. I was listening to the radio on the day, when it was repor...

Re: Dissertation survey
on a dual carriageway, most drivers expect to see turnings / junctions / roundabouts / laybys / camera vans on the verge / utilities etc. on a motorway, most drivers expect to see nothing else - they feel that they are in their own private lane and nothing will get in the way - therefore, they swit...

Re: Dissertation survey
Completed it. Would be interesting to see the outcomes and contrast daily mail reading public to ADS? I beg your pardon! Are you suggesting that AD's don't read the Daily Mail? (I have been told that though I read the DM I am not a Mail reader! My offspring consider that buying the DM is funding ha...

Re: Dissertation survey
Put this in any other comments: All my answers have been negative about Smart Motorways. I consider that there is a trade-off between motorway capacity and safety, and I accept that Smart Motorways done better may be an appropriate way to increase the capacity of overcrowded motorways. Smart Motorwa...

Re: IAM members assessment
My extremely limited experience of non police IAM examiners locally suggests that they may well be less expert than the police ones. As has been implied by others above, there are a number of us here who have even more training, experience, and dare I say relevant expertise than the police examiners...

Re: Off-siding
I have a car with Adaptive Cruise Control. There are numerous occasions when I would prefer a regular cruise control including those mentioned, but on the other hand there are also many situations where it helps. It is easy to turn the adaptive function off using a control on the steering wheel but ...

Re: Off-siding
Seen this? Watched it for the first time just now - only as far as 4 1/2 minutes. That very definitely encourages crossing a line to gain a view - very un-IAM. Personally I was a bit dubious about 4 1/4 minutes. I would have liked a video available to the public to put more emphasis on when and why...

"From 1960 p38, referring to same term, an "earlier view" (with my highlighting).... "...and into left-hand bends by keeping slightly over to the right when approaching the bend. Lining up in this way must only be resorted to when it is perfectly safe to do so, and in any case th...

Re: Off-siding
The IAM do approve crossing the centre line to straighten kinks; what they don't approve is crossing the centre line before a left hander to extend the view. Having said that, that has been published in the past as an official position, but what they say changes over time and gets interpreted differ...
