Re: Mobile phones

Now you're just being deliberately obtuse. Well, maybe, but you have to admit that it reads more like a BRAKE press release than (for example) the Highway Code. Although I answer very few calls whilst moving, I do appreciate knowing that someone is trying to call me and who they are - and I can't s...

Re: Mobile phones

I also think that a ban at this stage would be politically and practically impossible [...] I agree. That's why the legislation doesn't cover hands-free (the practicality anyway). [...] so a code of best practice would be the most logical route to go down. It already exists. You choose to ignore it...

Re: Mobile phones

I have no idea why ....(hands free) mobile phones are seen as such a potent distraction that they need to be banned? Why not try to improve understanding of all possible driving distractions and encourage best practice? Really? You have no idea why? Perhaps a more accurate way of phrasing it would ...

Re: Mobile phones

It might be true that parts of the brain can only focus on one task at a time, but if (for example) that complete focus only lasts for fractions of a second and/or is being switched rapidly between tasks then for practical purposes you can deal with a number of things 'simultaneously' 'If' . . . Th...

Re: Mobile phones

That can't be true... We can all walk / breath / etc. simultaneously - I can walk, breathe and juggle at the same time - loads of combinations of things we can do together... It must be about balance between subconscious and conscious surely? Alasdair Yes of course it is, and also what is meant by ...

Re: Mobile phones

If you are unable to multi-task then you are unable to drive a car. Any car driver trying (for example) to fly a helicopter or even plough a field, could decide after a few minutes that they were not capable of such complex multi-tasking, but after several hours they might surprise themselves. Not ...

Re: Mobile phones

Yes, the same sort of multi - tasking by participants which keeps close-up 'magicians' in business ;) If you are unable to multi-task then you are unable to drive a car. Re: Mobile phones

Turning all your attention away from a hands free call back to driving can be instantaneous [...] Only if your paying attention to the hands-free call has not caused you to miss the very thing that requires you to switch your attention back instantaneously. I was thinking more in terms of returning...

Re: Mobile phones

It definitely more hazardous to hold the phone, but the difference in risk level compared to hands free isn't necessarily as pronounced as one might assume. Maybe, but the crucial distinction is: holding a phone and operating it involves inevitable driving impairment; having a hands free phone conn...
