Re: Infinite Improbability Drive
"So should we all be driving[...]so that if a vehicle comes the wrong way we can act or react accordingly?" In general, I am in favor of planning also to a scenario where another road user will be going the other way, whether it's in a roundabout, a controlled junction, a winding road or ...

Re: Mobile phones
but we all know that a human can do two things - just with deterioration in each task - think of a pedestrian texting on their mobile while walking. Essentially, no. Humans barely multitask at all. They simply switch their attention back and forth between two or more tasks. They don't do them simul...

Re: Mobile phones
It definitely more hazardous to hold the phone, but the difference in risk level compared to hands free isn't necessarily as pronounced as one might assume.

Re: Learning and teaching others how to learn
1. Yes. Part of what I do with other drivers is to bring things they do in a subconscious competence to their conscious awareness, hone it and than reassimilate it into the subconscious. 2. Generally, I coach, albeit very prescriptively at times. I like helping people unlock their existing capabilit...

Re: Mobile phones
Also, the law isn't quite so dynamic and flexible as to accommodate for every piece of up-to-date research.

Re: Lane Discipline
Not necessarily, both classic and momentum are safe if applied correctly. That's sort of my approach. I keep two seconds away from the lead vehicle and start to move to the offside in a long, flat diagonal, and start the overtake at the moment where I have a clear view, but no earlier than when the...

Re: Lane Discipline
For tailgating I'd have though anything less than a 1 second following gap would be worthy of "falling below the standard expected of a competent driver". You get the gist and I believe it would be do-able. Is the police-style overtaking preparation close 'contact' following position like...

Re: Lane Discipline
I'm actually not sure that's a good idea. The situation you are describing is quite common here and although the laws on undertaking are the same, I'm not in favor of undertaking at such a small speed differential. The problem with undertaking (which is why it's technically illegal) is that drivers ...

Re: Mobile phones
As one who knows Terrorism from pretty close up, I am still advocating for more road safety. Even in an eventfull year like when we fought with Hamas (got me a medal and everything), no more than fifty people died from terrorist acts, missile attacks or fighting in the Gaza Strip. In most years, whe...

Re: Fooling ABS?
Posted on another forum: " you can lock all four wheels of an ABS-equipped car on sheet ice " Really? The suggestion was that the car will think it's parked, so switch of the ABS. Doesn't sound likely. What they could be getting at is that ABS can't actually work below a certain speed of ...
