Re: Learners on motorways
All these short slip roads and traffic lights on 70mph roads indicate that drivers need to be prepared to brake quite firmly in order to reduce speed more rapidly than you would normally prefer to do. Three stage braking is still the order of the day but stage 2 is going to require close to maximum ...

Re: Learners on motorways
That sounds about right for the typical short sighted approach to testing. Only learn the stuff that will come up in the exam. Totally flies in the face of the old adage “you’ve passed your test, now you can start to learn to drive.”

Re: Learners on motorways
My instructor routed me along a dual carriageway on my third lesson. Several miles at 70mph.
I sometimes use the “avoid motorways” option in TomTom to find a more interesting and involving route when time is mot of the essence.

And yet the IAM has stated that AEB is the must have safety feature we should all be looking for when we change our car.

Re: Time lapse of highwat crash in Iowa
In his book, Mind Driving, Stephen Haley suggests that one second for each 10mph plus one second which means an eight second gap at 70mph to allow space and hence time for a more controlled stop. Two seconds at 70 is enough to cover the reaction time but assumes that you will push the pedal through ...

How about M4/A308(M)/A404(M) otherwise known as junction 8/9. It has traffic lights and signs saying that motorway regulations still apply, no stopping or pedestrians.
One that used to be bit isn’t any longer is the Carrington spur on the M60 junction 8. The spur is the A6144, formerly A6144(M).

Re: Have diesel cars got a future?
Taxing cars by carbon dioxide emission was always going to lead to the situation we found ourselves in. Nobody likes paying road tax so manufacturers build cars that minimise the tax payable. Eventually the take from road tax drops to the point where Government finds it necessary to rejig the system...
