Re: BBC Panorama

There's so much variation between vehicles that any suggestion of a fixed relationship between speed and gear is going to be wrong quite a lot of the time. ... and right a surprising amount of the rest of the time ... however much you may object to "rules of thumb" :) - and if you can quo...

Re: Reg's Youtube Channel

For me, partial overlap - brake down to the turn, declutching when required to prevent judder, pre-select 2nd or 1st depending on car before the turn and while still braking, let out clutch with rev matching as soon as no longer downhill.

What disadvantage would that have compared to H & T?

Re: The perfect car.... ...?!

I have to admit, I wouldn't purchase the "perfect" car if one ever existed. If you had the perfect car that never goes wrong, works perfectly, everything is just so, literally the definition of perfection for you, how dull would it be? Sure, life would be easy, but would it be fun? It wou...

Re: Braking

And there's the contradiction: for whatever the reasons (good aerodynamics, autoboxes going into 'neutral', etc.), just easing off the throttle won't actually slow the car too much from higher speeds. As I said earlier, I'll save fuel by easing off and losing a few mph, before braking - but I'll ch...

Re: Issues with our car...

If there is no. Issue when coasting I think the garage is on the wrong lines and you should consider going somewhere different.

Consider drive shafts and all connections between engine and wheels.

Re: Braking

So presumably there is an entrance on the bend which I cannot see?

Re: Braking

For once I can understand one of SD's illustrations and it is a very clever way of illustrating this topic. But I don't agree - yet. I like a maintaining speed section after acceleration, and a brief period only of deceleration without braking before starting to brake. Dave seems to say he prefers t...

Re: Braking

I enjoyed the 13 point plan. What I am finding difficult is how to decide when to start braking and how firmly to brake for a given hazard. The later you leave it to start braking the more you know about the hazard and therefore how much speed you need to lose. But the later you leave it to start br...

Re: Braking

Have you seen the new Youtube video on braking by the (renamed) Reg Local?

He emphasises a 3 stage approach whereas I more often go for a progressive build up and reduction of braking effort as illustrated on P105 of Roadcraft.
