Re: IAM Bad Habits

Taking the same amount of kinetic energy out of a vehicle by either hard braking or gentle braking will create the same wear and tear, no? I seem to remember reading that harder braking means shorter time on the brakes means more time cooling means better performance. Does that result in less wear ...

Re: Highway Code Review for cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders

Of course some are obviously badly implemented. Several cycle lanes around here are very narrow, even on major routes. This includes the most recently created lanes that include bollards. I haven't stopped to measure, but I'd guess at between 1m to 1.2m from kerb to inside edge of white paint. Pass...

Re: Highway Code Review for cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders

Re: Sic Transit Gloria

We hired one a few weeks ago. Generally very nice (for a van) but when empty the brake pedal seemed to instigate an emergency stop if you so much as looked* at it!

*figure of speech, I obviously don't look at the brake pedal when driving.

Re: New Audi A6 - not able to switch off Stop/Start function

In our automatic I find that it is possible to lift the brake enough that the engine starts without inducing any creep.

Also, one of the features of sport mode is that auto stop start is switched off.

Re: Driving instructors and learners - do they drive like each other?

AFAIK it's generally not possible to disable ABS except by pulling a fuse. I have a vague memory that it was a feature on some as IIRC a fully locked wheel could stop quicker in some circumstances - thick fresh snow or gravel as they would build up in front of the wheels. https://jalopnik.com/how-t...

Re: Santa list?

these jackets also glow under street lighting. Glow? How's that work then? [geekwithvaguememoryofphysics] The fluorescent yellow or orange of hi-viz etc can appear to glow as if more light is being reflected from it compared a similar coloured surface. Fluorescence occurs when UV light is co...
