Re: People Power - but who(m)?
For the life of me I cannot understand why they are posting this nonsense on LinkedIn. Someone, presumably a paid employee, has to compose and post this utterly pointless missive. It’s a complete waste of the members hard earned subscriptions. But more than that it simply highlights their complete l...

Re: Ford Motor Company "hands Free system"
Why are we even allowing this? It flies in the face of all the human factors research that says humans are terrible at monitoring things that /mostly/ don't need their attention  :hit: I'm not even sure what benefits it offers if you have to pay a meaningful amount of attention. Is keeping yo...

Re: IAM members assessment
I don’t really want any tutoring/mentoring which, if the goal is a straightforwards retest, arguably constitutes a form of cheating. If I took that path then I’d never know whether I’d have passed without it, and whether training from my initial course still held good. May I be so bold as to sugges...

Re: IAM members assessment
It’s nearly five years since I passed my IAM (plain pass, not f1rst), which had been something of a lifetime ambition that I only got around to in retirement. Since then I have grown older, with no evidence of growing wiser. I have started to receive state pension as well as occasional discounts in...

Re: Highway Code Review for cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders
So... the answer is, "It depends...". Exactly. But try explaining that to whoever writes the Highway Code! :( I once used the phrase “it just depends” during a discussion with a retired advanced-wing instructor from Hendon police driving school. He looked at me as though I had just landed...

Re: Highway Code Review for cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders
An excellent exposition of a confusing concept.
He is the first person to introduce an element of sanity and common sense into a topic that is completely misunderstood by many drivers.

Re: Off-siding
I accept all that’s been said in favour of using lane 2/3 of a DC for a better view on DCs and I’ve been doing so since long before my IAM membership. But I do find myself less inclined these days if there’s any other traffic at all behind me, even it’s if a long way back. Here’s a few not uncommon...

Re: Off-siding
All else being equal, if you are not inconveniencing anyone and you can see further ahead on a DC then why shouldn't (or indeed wouldn't) you be in L2 (or more)? Because of Highway code, one of several mentions is 137 "On a two-lane dual carriageway you should stay in the left-hand lane. Use t...

Lies, all lies
Mark, you and John are both very kind. I’m always happy to listen to you both whilst driving. Hopefully, I’ll be back in action in a few months time and look forward to driving again with yourselves and others on here.

Re: Greetings
Congratulations on your success. Commentary is an invaluable tool. I always run a continuous, silent, commentary in my head whenever driving. It means that my wife can sleep peacefully throughout the journey, which is nice. If I ever have a “chatty” passenger I just silence their chat with constant ...
