I am quite sure that there was a recent post from Sussex RPU or an article in a local rag that said they would be administering roadside eyesight checks for all vehicles that they had cause to stop and a failure to read a licence plate at 20m would result in on-the-spot licence revocation via DVLA....

The best thing IMO would be to make drivers have periodic eye tests. I honestly believe that a lot of problems on the roads are caused by poor eyesight rather than deliberate bad behaviour. Straight ahead may have priority but UK law is pretty weak on this along with many other motoring 'facts'. It perhaps relies on our contentious system of law whereas in other countries it may, and I say may, be more clear cut.

It's a dodgy game the police are playing and there are bound to be mistakes. It is along the same lines as the general arming of the police; that needs a public that will accept that every now and then an innocent person will be killed or seriously injured.
