Re: Dissertation survey

And if the failure is such that you can't make it? Do you really want to be forced to sit in a live lane with 40 tons of HGV sharing it, maybe with a driver that is staring at his phone "Want to"? Of course not. But it won't stop me using them. Nor me, unless there is a viable alternative...

Re: Dissertation survey

... for me, part of driving on a smart motorway is to be prepared, if the car starts to fail - the merest hint, I'll do the utmost to coax it into the next refuge area. And if the failure is such that you can't make it? Do you really want to be forced to sit in a live lane with 40 tons of HGV shari...

Re: Dissertation survey

Something like 1/12 of mway fatalities happen on the HS and about 100 people die or are injured in HS collisions ever year. I thought the proportion was actually higher than that... but I would take my chances pulling off onto a hard shoulder, or a verge, or whatever space happens to be available o...

Re: Dissertation survey

Everything's a trade-off. Indeed. The point is that on a Smart Motorway there is no way to get out of the live lane other than into a refuge which very easily could be too far away. On a DC you will usually have some way of at least getting mostly out of the way. The former is inherently more dange...

Re: Dissertation survey

Put this in any other comments: All my answers have been negative about Smart Motorways. I consider that there is a trade-off between motorway capacity and safety, and I accept that Smart Motorways done better may be an appropriate way to increase the capacity of overcrowded motorways. Smart Motorw...

Re: IAM members assessment

One Saturday morning, a youngish chap was in, just ordered a new bike. He'd just passed his L test. The subject of extra training came up. "I've just done a five day course, what else is there to learn?" Look out... Donald incoming... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiPe1OiKQuk
