Only if you are a little over the limit in the breath test.

Re: Diesel now bad?

One needs to remember that standards are much tighter now. When I grew in 70s and 80s it was legal to run cars that spewed out enough lead and other toxics that it could kill you in minutes, and I used to have to walk to school beside a busy road exposed to all that stuff. Don't try this at home fol...

Re: Low Profile Tyres. Why?

Modern alloys mean that the rims can be much lighter than the tyres - hence you want bigger rims and smaller tyres. I'm wondering why you think this - have you weighed any wheels and tyres to check? Have you weighed racing wheels? :-) On a track racing car you don't really need your rims to survive...

Re: Low Profile Tyres. Why?

I suppose the question is why do racing cars have low profile tyres? (F1 doesn't but it's specifically in the regs). Is it better handling and more feedback? It is indeed! It's all about minimizing unsprung weight. Tyre rubber is quite heavy so minimizing it is beneficial to handling on the track, ...

Re: Glimmer of hope?

It is perhaps worth reading the full report and taking note of the many important caveats most notably: Motorists may still be under the impression that the cameras are working as the housings are regularly maintained and not covered in bags stating they are out of use. Previous, unpublished resear...

Re: Leaving your car in gear when parked

I don't know if this is a factor that actually affects many models, but I seem to recall a time when the Citroen Xantia was said to suffer from this problem. The Xantia's had a different problem, where the handbrake operated the front disc brakes. The problem was that if the discs were hot enough t...

Re: Fuel Additives - When is it too much?

It's yet another example of confirmation bias at work. If one spends a lot of money on something one will inevitably convince oneself that things are better. Dave alluded to audophiles earlier, typically middle aged men whose hearing (as will all of us old fogeys) is not what it once is, who convinc...

Re: RoSPA launches website to keep older drivers safe on the roads

This is probably because the only reason for an 'Assessment' to take place would be because someone already believes the 'Mature Driver' to be unsafe? Hopefully it is not a reflection on driving standards amongst the elderly in general. I suspect it's more a reflection of the difference between wha...

Re: Parliament Briefing Papers

Yes - Sect 2 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 as amended. It's just a matter of interpretation. The Scottish courts have ruled that the evidence of a reading from a speed meter indicating a speed well above the prevailing speed limit can on it's own be evidence of a standard of driving that falls far be...
