Re: Unsigned speed limits

The road markings can't be used instead of terminal signs but could be used instead of repeaters which are no longer mandatory. Prior to the change in the regulations the DfT may well have authorised non-compliant signage for parks and forests. https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2016/362/schedule/1...

Re: Driving to the conditions?

Had the driver slowed to 20 mph some 30 metres before the crossing the car would have been 12 metres away from it, not 5 when the child ran out. The judge found that the extra distance meant the child, probably, would not have 'frozen' on the crossing but kept on running. See 83 (which isn't above) ...

Re: Driving to the conditions?

For those with the time and the inclination the judgment is here https://www.bailii.org/ew/cases/EWHC/KB/2023/1671.html# I've higlighted some of the more pertinent parts below. This judgement does not set a precedent that 20 mph is the correct speed to approach a pedestrian crossing and/or bus stop ...

Re: Driving to the conditions?

2023-07-10.png Imagine this in the dark but with streetlighting, oncoming vehicles with headlights on and a car around 30 metres in front of you. It is raining. A group of secondary school age children is waiting at the offside bus stop. A child approaches the crossing on the nearside and stops. I'...

Re: Motorcycle videos

If the van had taken the first turning it would be interesting to see what would happen if a similarly sized van stopped at the give way sign on the straight bit, blocking the first van's exit and the rear of the first van - still on the major road - blocking the view of the driver of the second van.

Re: Motorcycle videos

I'd have taken the second turning because the view into the minor road is better.

Re: An interesting, if unsettling, development.

If it's any consolation Bill, I prefer audio guidance rather than visual and I don't like to use satnav without the audio. Although I find that I tend to use the audio to avoid missing a turning and the screen to help identify which one I need.

Re: Dissertation survey

I thought that the safety benefit of 'Smart' motorways is that by limiting the flow of traffic in each lane to a similar speed 'undertaking' and consequently 'stop-start' traffic is reduced, resulting in a reduction in collisions which are caused by very high speed-differences. Use of the hard-shoul...

Re: 20 limits - 'the facts'...

Restricting speed limits to 20mph in town and city centres has little impact on road traffic collisions and casualties, researchers have found. Speed limits have been lowered from 30mph in hundreds of urban areas across Britain in the last 20 years, with London due to bring in blanket 20mph restrict...

Re: A shift with the RPU (aka traffic police)

How do they avoid traffic moving out in front of them with such large speed differences?
