Re: Second thoughts on offsiding

I go further in that I don't do it when there are any other road users in sight, for fear that it will be percieved as reckless driving rather than a deliberate manuever.

Re: Second thoughts on offsiding

Another thought occurs: while the inside circumference of the corner is more likely to be slippery, its also traversed by the inside wheels and so is unlikely to upset the car's balance too gravely. This would make a case for straightening (or "shaving") corners (which requires an open vie...

Re: Second thoughts on offsiding

Now the example given about the oil on the road is one that cause you problems however over the years I have rarely come across spills and that includes diesel. True, its very rare; but the need to optimize the car's stability stems from fear of those very cases, rare though they may be: any sensib...

Re: Second thoughts on offsiding

Major spills of oil are admittedly rare. A case that I recall from several years ago was that of a lorry with a flat tyre which pulled over the side of the road. It had a leak that resulted in diesel pooling inside a rut formed by the flat tyre, which eventually overflowed into the lane - the driver...

Re: Second thoughts on offsiding

I have known oil spills to sit on the crown of the road and in the raised middle of a roundabout. Well, that's because the raised middle is more level. Similarly I have known ice to form in sunken pickets and I have known it to form on raised portions of the road which are more exposed. Ice can for...

Re: Second thoughts on offsiding

with any of them, you are more stable = good thing. Oh, I agree. unless this unseen hazard has a higher chance of being in one place or another. But it often does. Superelevation, the transition from road crown to and from superelevation and the change in the degree of superelevation across the wid...

Re: Second thoughts on offsiding

road profile affects different vehicles in different ways = e.g. bike may be more susceptible to changes in profile than a car. My z3 tramlines more than the M5, so I would tend to drive them differently... Sure, but I'm referring to its effect on the runoff of slippery substances. It means that bo...

Re: Second thoughts on offsiding

But only using one at a time. If the hypothetical oil/ice patch is on only one side of the road, the chances of it being on the near side presumably equal those of it being on the off side (exempt conditions where one side experiences more weather than the other - and then you choose the obviously-...

Second thoughts on offsiding

'm back. Anyway, I've been having second thoughts about the concept of offsiding. Which isn't a huge deal since I rarely use it: its not a widely-known concept in the Israeli Advanced Driving coaching community. I only use it when no other road user is in sight, for fear that it would be percieved i...

Re: Infinite Improbability Drive

Besides, there is also something to be said for the universal practicality of advanced driving. Usually we think about a universal driving style or attitude in terms of it being transferable between different cars and different vehicle types, or between different driving environments, but I think th...
