Re: Latest bit of idiocy

Tesla's aren't fitted with LIDAR and rely on radar and cameras to see distant objects as I understand it. I believe stationary objects are filtered out of the radar results because there are too many false positives, so you end up with a system that can't really see things that aren't moving.

Re: Website not secure ?

We still have to log in on here, which means a password is going unencrypted. I'm sure everyone has good hygiene and uses a different and secure password for each site ( ), but it's still a good idea to make people think more about online security. Seconded. It doesn't bother me personally be...

Re: Pedestrian killed by self driving car.

Please don't read too much into the video. A human in that situation would have been able to see far better, and so should the car. The car had lidar, which shouldn't have been affected by the darkness at all, and likely much higher quality cameras that didn't get ran through such aggressive compres...

Re: Safety systems are there to be gamed...

At some level we all accept that a pedestrian who dives sideways into a road at the wrong moment will get hit, or a car that runs a red into a stream of traffic, or swerves to the other side of the road in the wrong situation. It doesn't mean that an autonomous car is wrong for getting into this sit...

Re: Safety systems are there to be gamed...

LIDAR is much more capable than what Tesla do. Tesla attempt to figure out distance from a bunch of cheap sensors like cameras, LIDAR can actually measure distance and identify things that blend into the background for example.

Re: Why autonomous cars won't be able to drive properly...

I don't really see experience derived prediction being a weakness of an autonomous car. Few people will drive more than a million miles in their lifetime - autonomous vehicles could potentially do that in a day. The quantity of experience advantage is firmly on their side. I don't have a great under...

Re: 'Advanced' - a solicitor writes

Is it a human that programmes the robot? ;) https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/599wnz/germany-has-created-the-worlds-first-ethical-guidelines-for-driverless-cars Largely it isn't a human that programs the car. They write a program that can learn (to drive), and then encourage it to do so. T...

Re: Limited Slip Diffs?

My (limited) experience has been that I've driven 2 front wheel drive cars that had no issue that I could see accelerating hard or of tighter corners; I believe one had an LSD and the other didn't. Both had high end tires though, far more capable (in good conditions) than those that would come on th...

The one I've always idly wondered about is whether roundabouts should be 70.
